Could the Box Office Success of "Black Panther" Claw Open the Door to More Indie Filmmakers of Color?

2/28/2018

IFAP Founder Floyd Marshall and others
weigh in on the "Black Panther" phenomenon

IFAP Founder Floyd Marshall
IFAP Founder Floyd Marshall weighs in on the film "Black Panther"
“With a [worldwide] box office of $520 million and climbing, I think Black Panther will make Hollywood more comfortable giving directors of color larger budgets. Sad that they didn’t in the past, but it is what it is. With this movie breaking records with an all-Black cast, it lets Hollywood know that the African-American dollar is a force.

This will give more people of color broader opportunities and negotiating power when looking to make a film. It will open the door for more independent filmmakers of color on the cusp, because studios will want to be the one to find the next Coogler.”

"Black Panther" has
earned over $500 million worldwide and been seen by an audience that is

  • 56% Men
  • 44% Women
  • 37% African American
  • 36% Caucasian
  • 18% Latino/Hispanic
  • 5% Asian
  • 5% Other

"I would hope that Coogler’s efforts are not just pushed under the rug but actually get Hollywood’s attention.

I also hope that this movie has inspired minority filmmakers to continue doing what they do, making great films, staying knowledgeable in their craft, and never giving up."

"Yes, I believe it will [open doors to more indie filmmakers]. However, I don't just think it's the success of "Black Panther."

I think "Black Panther" is partly successful because it's a part of the zeitgeist of the moment -- a moment that's been building for years, but particularly since the #OscarsSoWhite backlash."
