Season 4 of the 5 Shorts Project will showcase the debut works of five individual female filmmakers on Saturday, March 17, 1-3 pm. at PhillyCAM, 699 Ranstead St., Philadelphia, PA. Admission is free and members of the public are welcome.

Founded by Shameka S. L. Sawyer, the 5 Shorts Project, helps aspiring filmmakers produce their first works.
The budding movie makers gain film credits, production skills, and experience as 5 Shorts filmmakers guide and support them through the entire filmmaking process - from production planning to filming and editing. Check out her interview on the MicheleSpeaks show on WWDB 860-AM.

The Season 4 lineup includes:
  • A is for Apple by Theresa Anderson - On the first day of school, the heat is turned up on unsuspecting students when their teacher, Dr. Anne Savage, throws them a few surprises in first period chemistry.
  • Love Finally by Janelle T. Harvey - When repeated heartbreak spurs a shaky Faythe to ditch dating altogether, she’s confronted with a new man who makes her heart flutter. But can he be the lifeline that makes her feel secure enough to wade back into the deep end of the dating pool?
  • #NPWD (New Phone Who Dis?) by Kamillah Abdul -  A young carefree woman finally decides to take a stand in her life and make some changes. But in a moment of weakness, she finds herself drifting back to her old ways. Her past then catches up with her and a decision has to be made.
  • N O W by Bethel Sheppard Bates - Three people wrestle with the devastating aftermath of failing to do the right thing at the right time.
  • Pocket by Dione Mcleod - Just when she thinks she's got it all together - great career, great boyfriend, great new job opportunity - Erin runs headlong into her ex, Sam, who starts to expose the cracks beneath her oh-so perfect surface.

Could the Box Office Success of "Black Panther" Claw Open the Door to More Indie Filmmakers of Color?

2/28/2018

IFAP Founder Floyd Marshall and others
weigh in on the "Black Panther" phenomenon

IFAP Founder Floyd Marshall
IFAP Founder Floyd Marshall weighs in on the film "Black Panther"
“With a [worldwide] box office of $520 million and climbing, I think Black Panther will make Hollywood more comfortable giving directors of color larger budgets. Sad that they didn’t in the past, but it is what it is. With this movie breaking records with an all-Black cast, it lets Hollywood know that the African-American dollar is a force.

This will give more people of color broader opportunities and negotiating power when looking to make a film. It will open the door for more independent filmmakers of color on the cusp, because studios will want to be the one to find the next Coogler.”

"Black Panther" has
earned over $500 million worldwide and been seen by an audience that is

  • 56% Men
  • 44% Women
  • 37% African American
  • 36% Caucasian
  • 18% Latino/Hispanic
  • 5% Asian
  • 5% Other

"I would hope that Coogler’s efforts are not just pushed under the rug but actually get Hollywood’s attention.

I also hope that this movie has inspired minority filmmakers to continue doing what they do, making great films, staying knowledgeable in their craft, and never giving up."

"Yes, I believe it will [open doors to more indie filmmakers]. However, I don't just think it's the success of "Black Panther."

I think "Black Panther" is partly successful because it's a part of the zeitgeist of the moment -- a moment that's been building for years, but particularly since the #OscarsSoWhite backlash."
